The Story of 3:16 Last update: August 2012

I will not suggest that the Bible be studied in this way - without understanding the context of the written Word. Nonetheless, as a matter of interest I have taken the sixteenth verse of every New Testament's chapter three (those that have a 3:16) and listed them hereunder.

It makes for interesting reading - if you add these text together it reads something like this (click here).

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,

Mark 3:16:

And He appointed the twelve:  Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter),

Luke 3:16:

John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

"And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,

but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

speaking of these things  as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.

1 John 3:16

The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

The Story of 3:16

From of old mankind received promises from God. Now when the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed God does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ (Galatians) - Christ is the Promise.

After millennia has passed, John the Baptist is asked about Jesus, and he answers, "I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Luke).

Then, after He Himself was baptized by John, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him (Matthew).

Following this, He appointed the twelve: the first being Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter) (Mark).

Referring to how the Israelites in the desert needed to look at a serpent that was hung on a stick so that they, the people of God, could be healed, Jesus says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John).

Faith in Jesus' name has given real life to many as the story is told of a man who believed in Jesus victory on the cross - he believed in His name:  "And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all" (Acts).

But not all believed and so we are reminded of what Scripture says: "destruction and misery are in their paths" (Romans). This is not a new thing as the question is rightly asked, "Who were those who rebelled when they heard? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt under Moses?" (Philemon). Living away from God's truth is like having a veil over your face, but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away (2 Corinthians). And so, as believers we are reminded to live a Godly life because we now know better: "Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (1 Corinthians). "That he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self" (Ephesians). Because of this, to some in the church God says, "because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth" (Revelation).

To have Jesus is to have His message, His Word. And so, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God (Colossians).

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy). But do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame (1 Peter).

Paul is speaking of these things as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures (2 Peter). For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice (James).

Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion, Who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory (1 Timothy).

The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers (1 John). Only, with regard to what we have attained, continue on the same course (Philipians). And, may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you (2 Thessalonians).
